Apple Tablet Rumor Discussion

Rumors of an Apple tablet, or jumbo iPod Touch have been flying around for quite some time now. While an Apple Tablet is nothing more than a rumor right now, I joined six other mobile tech bloggers to wade through the rumors and discuss what features we expect to see if this thing ever comes to market.

Chippy, JKKMobile, Sascha, Warner , Brad, and Ben all had great points of views. With two bloggers in Europe, four in the U.S. and one in Asia, I think we managed to put together a pretty worldly view on the topic.

Several of us on the call are iPhone users, but none said they would pay for 3G on an iTablet or jumbo iPod Touch. Of course, a lot of questions still remain and we are still looking for that one killer use-case that would make such a device a must buy.

3G Enabled Apple Tablet Set for Early 2010

Apple Insider is reporting that the much talked about Apple Tablet is set for an early 2010 appearance. The brainchild of Steve Jobs, the Apple Tablet will feature a 10″ touchscreen and 3G. Apple Insider reports that Jobs had been working behind the scenes during his medical leave, maintaining direct control of the Apple Tablet.

Apple Insider states, “The past six months have reportedly seen the critical pieces fall into place. Jobs, who’s been overseeing the project from his home, office and hospital beds, has finally achieved that much-sought aura of satisfaction. He’s since cemented the device in the company’s 2010 roadmap, where it’s being positioned for a first quarter launch, according to people well-respected by AppleInsider for their striking accuracy in Apple’s internal affairs.”

Although it appears that the Apple Tablet is rumor no more, there are still many unknown variables. There are many reports that both Apple and AT&T are unhappy with current relations. Industry whispers are suggesting Verizon as a key player in offering 3G connectivity. Another major question mark is what processor will power the Apple Tablet. It was early suggested that Intel’s Atom processor line might provide the juice, but it’s looking like Apple’s own PA Semiconductor will provide the power. Apple, Verizon could launch tablet in time for the holidays

In case you missed it, Apple isn’t developing a netbook. The company has reiterated this point at every possible opportunity over the last year or so. But that doesn’t mean the company has nothing to offer in the small, light, and ultraportable computing category. Rumors of an Apple tablet that will be larger than an iPhone but smaller than a Macbook have been flying for the past half year or so.

Now The Street reports that Apple’s 9 to 10 inch tablet could be available before the holiday season. And while the tablet might not be as cheap as today’s netbooks, which commonly sell for around $400 or less, The Street reports that the Apple Tablet could be distributed by Verizon, with the telecom subsidizing the price.

It’s possible that the tablet, which will reportedly be a larger version of the iPod Touch, could have a keyboard. But the deal with Verizon is intriguing, because it implies that the tablet will be 3G capable, which means in some ways it could be an oversized iPhone. The Street says the tablet will be a data-only device, without voice capabilities. But why?

Throw a little bluetooth headset in there, and you could even make calls while leaving the tablet itself packed away in your bag. Because let’s face it, are you really going to want to buy this tablet plus an iPhone if you have to sign up for separate 3G data plans for each?

Rugged Tablet PCs have been around for a while, but the Intel Atom processor seems to be opening the door to a new breed. Hothardware reports that the Duros 8404 rugged Tablet has been given the netbook’s famed Intel Atom processor (as an option rather than a 1.0 GHz Celeron M) and an 8.4″ sunlight readable LCD screen. The LED screen’s brightness is 1,1000 nits with a 120-degree viewing angle. No details on price are available, but don’t expect this puppy to be in the netbook range. The 8404 can also be equiped with Wi-FI, Bluetooth, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, and GPS. It is clear this Tablet has been designed for the outdoor mobile warrior.
