Because I joined a group of mobile tech bloggers to talk about that very topic this afternoon. And we recorded the whole thing as a podcast which is available for your downloading or streaming pleasure.

On the podcast are Chippy from UMPC Portal, JKKMobile, Sascha from NetbookNews.de, Warner from GottaBeMobile, Xavier from Notebooks.com, and Ben from UMPC Portal. As it turns out, there weren’t a lot of Apple enthusiasts in the bunch, so I’m not sure you get the most balanced picture. But considering we’re all spending a lot of time talking about something that admittedly, we know almost nothing about, so you should take the whole thing with a grain of salt anyway.

You can listen to the whole conversation by hitting the play button after the break.

Both Xavier and I enjoyed the privilege and the online international company of jkkmobile, Ben Lang of UMPCPortal, Brad Linder of Liliputing, Sascha Pallenberg of NetbookNews as we all tossed around out thoughts, speculation, and ideas about whether or not the Apple Tablet is more than a rumor, and if it is what kind of impact it may have.

It was a very interesting and revealing discussion and while there was some agreement among the participants, I think you’ll find there are some interesting diverging opinions as well.

You can check out the podcast or subscribe to the Meet:Mobility podcast here.

BTW, there is no truth to the rumor that we were all not wearing clothes when the podcast was recorded.

A funny thing started happening when people started downloading music from the internet (whether they paid for tracks or not). We started prioritizing songs over albums. It used to be that you’d hear a song you liked on the radio and you’d go out to buy the CD, tape, record, or 8-track recording that contained that track. Now you can purchase albums a la carte, and some artists put out songs one track at a time… but according to a Financial Times article, Apple has a plan to revive the album in the age of digital music. And it may involve the long-rumored Apple tablet.

According to the Financial Times, Apple is working with the four major record labels to offer digital versions of liner notes, artwork, and the other goodies that you get when you purchase music in a physical media format. If the Financial Times is putting its facts and rumors together right, Apple could launch the tablet this fall and use it as a platform for distributing digital albums and interactive media.

For instance, you could purchase an album with 10 to 15 tracks, listen to the songs on the tablet, and “flip” through pages of an accompanying book to read lyrics or other information or look at artwork using the touchscreen device. The albums will also reportedly includ video clips.

I’m not at all convinced that the reason people aren’t buying albums like they once did is because you don’t get liner notes and special content. It’s more likely because many people don’t see the point in paying for 12 songs when you only want two or three. But for music fans who were likely going to pay full price for the latest full albums from their favorite artists anyway, this could be a good deal.

I just hope this isn’t the only trick the Apple tablet will have up its sleeve. Because while a Kindle-for-music would be kind of neat, a device with a good web browser, on-screen or peripheral keyboard, and ability to run third party applications would be a lot more exciting.

It may be 2010, or it may be this fall, in any event, it looks like things are moving away from rumor and into speculation about what an Apple Tablet will actually be. According to the Financial Times, there is a content component that goes hand in hand with the Apple Tablet. Apple and the music companies are working on an interactive experience that will could bring CD-length music, videos, liner notes, and who knows what else to market. Of course the music industry is hoping this will help them sell more albums as opposed to just songs. Apparently the codename for this is Cocktail and the Financial Times article moves the timeline up to this holiday season.

In any event, it looks like those of us who predicted that whatever Apple would come up with as a Tablet would be some sort of entertainment device were on to it. Of course on a Tablet sized device, movies and videos of all stripes will be a big component as well. I also think this will see eBooks as a big component.

So here’s the question. What’s your interest in CD-length music complete with an interactive component?

If half the rumors about the Apple tablet are true (and only half can be true because they contradict the other half), then there can only be one conclusion: the Apple company as we know it will cease to exist.

In an exclusive, AppleInsider lets on that Apple has been working on their mythic tablet for years, resetting and rethinking the project several times, and is on track to have it ready for early next year (negating earlier rumors of a holiday release). That sounds like the Apple company I know. What doesn’t match up is the speculation that’s followed in a ridiculous game of oneupsmanship that throws out theories and speculation built on logic that would make sense if they weren’t so un-Apple-like.

$500 price tag: This one is the most obvious culprit of un-Apple thinking. It’s been floated by a few sources, but the logic from Jeff Bertolucci from Yahoo! Tech sums up the fallacy of this theory: “Some reports say $800 is likely, but that seems high for a consumer electronics device.” Yes, it does seem high. You know what else seems high? ALL of Apple’s prices. Their cheapest computer is $599 and doesn’t come with a monitor or input devices. That’s the same price as an unsubsidized iPhone 3GS (16GB, not the 32GB which is $100 more). So they’re going to sell their mythic tablet for $100 less than that? I don’t think so. Even an $800 price tag sounds highly optimistic.

4G/LTE connectivity: By itself, 4G connectivity is not an outrageous theory, but combined with a 2010 release date, it’s hard to swallow. If 4G makes it to market then, it will only be in “select” markets, seriously reducing the attractiveness of this feature. That won’t fly unless the tablet can fall back to a slower connection, but if they do sign up with Verizon as rumored, then the tablet would need to use CDMA. That’s fine for the States, but it’s not a global system like GSM. So then Apple needs to decide on whether to produce a GSM version for other markets or possibly make it work with both standards. Certainly possible, but it seems out of character for a company that put single-card readers in their notebooks, as opposed to multi-card readers.

Also, Apple is quick to drop technologies it considers no longer useful, but slow to adopt new technologies unless it’s entirely in their control, like multi-touch. They were early with dropping floppy disk support and are dropping Firewire support in most of their offerings, but they only recently added a card reader to Macbooks and still no Blu-Ray or integrated WWAN. If I was looking for someone to embrace 4G as soon as it becomes available in limited areas, I would not bother looking toward Apple.

And how would a 4G deal compete with tethering (i.e., Internet connection sharing) via the iPhone? We here in the U.S. haven’t gotten this feature yet, presumably because AT&T needs to increase their network capacity. But if AT&T intends to charge extra for tethering (and they will), I would guess Apple is negotiating a way to get their piece of that pie, which would best come as a subsidy for a Macbook purchase. It’s a simple idea: sign up for an iPhone tethering plan, get a discount on a Macbook to use that plan. Why would Apple offer a presumed cheaper tablet with 4G data connectivity to compete against that when they could be upselling Macbooks instead?

Usage scenario: One thing that hasn’t gotten much consideration is how Apple envisions their tablet to be used. This is highly important because Apple always has a plan behind every release. Will their tablet be a media consumption device, a video-centric version of the iPod? Will it be a mobile computer, an ultra-mobile Macbook? What market will it serve? My guess would be video-centric iPod.

An ultra-mobile Macbook would be akin to a Tablet PC, which has been primarily a vertical market device while Apple heavily targets the consumer market. Multi-touch screen control is wonderful, but without a keyboard, an Apple tablet will be seen as a toy, not a work machine (note: I disagree with that perception but I know it exists and endures for tablets). Thus, I see an Apple tablet being used primarily as an at-home device for watching video and surfing the web, which means anywhere-connectivity would not be a priority. True, it wouldn’t have the same utility as an iPhone, but again, I think Apple would prefer their customers to buy both an iPhone and a Mac (or iPhone and tablet).

All that said, nothing stops Apple from doing something as un-Apple-like as releasing a $500 Mac tablet equipped to use a newly introduced wireless data system limited to select markets. It just wouldn’t be the strategy I’ve come to expect from Apple. An Apple tablet certainly has revolutionary potential, but I find it hard to believe it would revolutionize Apple itself before it’s even released.

As for my prediction, I’m going to say the tablet will replace the Macbook, which was stripped down to one model, keeping its $1000 price tag, which can be subsidized if you add a tethering plan to your iPhone. Oh, and at least one more round of rumors, which will negate the current rumors (again), before all is revealed.

Contrary to reports of a release early next year, which contradicted the previous reports of a release later this year, The Financial Times is resetting the launch back to this year in September.

The talks come as Apple is separately racing to offer a portable, full-featured, tablet-sized computer in time for the Christmas shopping season, in what the entertainment industry hopes will be a new revolution. The device could be launched alongside the new content deals, including those aimed at stimulating sales of CD-length music, according to people briefed on the project.

This other deal they refer to relates to a plan to improve album sales by bundling them with interactive booklet, sleeve notes and other materials. Not sure why a tablet would have anything to do with that since the iPod is still pretty popular for music and a device with a 10″ screen would be harder to carry around, but we’ll see later this year (or early next, or whenever).

Apple Insider states, “The past six months have reportedly seen the critical pieces fall into place. Jobs, who’s been overseeing the project from his home, office and hospital beds, has finally achieved that much-sought aura of satisfaction. He’s since cemented the device in the company’s 2010 roadmap, where it’s being positioned for a first quarter launch, according to people well-respected by AppleInsider for their striking accuracy in Apple’s internal affairs.”

Although it appears that the Apple Tablet is rumor no more, there are still many unknown variables. There are many reports that both Apple and AT&T are unhappy with current relations. Industry whispers are suggesting Verizon as a key player in offering 3G connectivity. Another major question mark is what processor will power the Apple Tablet. It was early suggested that Intel’s Atom processor line might provide the juice, but it’s looking like Apple’s own PA Semiconductor will provide the power. Read more and see detailed artist rendition at Apple Insider.
