29Jul Parody: Apple Gets Pulled from Google Search Results

Apple is taking it on the chin when it comes to parody today. First was this wonderfully funny satire from The Onion of the entire Apple fan boy culture featuring an invisible iPhone called the 3GI. I understand that 3GI was actually ranking high in search results after this came out.

And speaking of search results, BBSpot has published another parody post claiming that Google, to exact revenge for Apple not allowing a Google Voice app, Google is pulling Apple.com from all of its search results. Here’s an excerpt:

Google’s official explanation for removing Apple from its search results came from Vice-President in charge of search, Marissa Mayer, “Those search results duplicate a lot of the functionality of other sites. For example, people can find cell phones on many other sites. We just think this makes it easier for our users.”

Funny stuff. So funny that Marissa Myer actually got caught forwarding it around, but she then deleted the Tweet. A friend asked me earlier today why there wasn’t a parody about AT&T and all of its failings. My response? Tough to turn tragedy born out of stupidity into parody.

29Jul Apple Tablet Rumor Discussion

Rumors of an Apple tablet, or jumbo iPod Touch have been flying around for quite some time now. While an Apple Tablet is nothing more than a rumor right now, I joined six other mobile tech bloggers to wade through the rumors and discuss what features we expect to see if this thing ever comes to market.

Chippy, JKKMobile, Sascha, Warner , Brad, and Ben all had great points of views. With two bloggers in Europe, four in the U.S. and one in Asia, I think we managed to put together a pretty worldly view on the topic.

Several of us on the call are iPhone users, but none said they would pay for 3G on an iTablet or jumbo iPod Touch. Of course, a lot of questions still remain and we are still looking for that one killer use-case that would make such a device a must buy.

29Jul Want to hear a bunch of people speculate about the possibility of an Apple tablet?

podcastThen you’re in luck. Because I joined a group of mobile tech bloggers to talk about that very topic this afternoon. And we recorded the whole thing as a podcast which is available for your downloading or streaming pleasure.

On the podcast are Chippy from UMPC Portal, JKKMobile, Sascha from NetbookNews.de, Warner from GottaBeMobile, Xavier from Notebooks.com, and Ben from UMPC Portal. As it turns out, there weren’t a lot of Apple enthusiasts in the bunch, so I’m not sure you get the most balanced picture. But considering we’re all spending a lot of time talking about something that admittedly, we know almost nothing about, so you should take the whole thing with a grain of salt anyway.

You can listen to the whole conversation by hitting the play button after the break.

29Jul Meet:Mobility Podcast Meets the Apple Tablet Rumors Head On

apple_tabletSteve “Chippy” Paine gathered a bunch of geeks together (virtually speaking of course) to talk about the latest round of Apple Tablet rumors and what they may or may not mean.

Both Xavier and I enjoyed the privilege and the online international company of jkkmobile, Ben Lang of UMPCPortal, Brad Linder of Liliputing, Sascha Pallenberg of NetbookNews as we all tossed around out thoughts, speculation, and ideas about whether or not the Apple Tablet is more than a rumor, and if it is what kind of impact it may have.

It was a very interesting and revealing discussion and while there was some agreement among the participants, I think you’ll find there are some interesting diverging opinions as well.

You can check out the podcast or subscribe to the Meet:Mobility podcast here.

BTW, there is no truth to the rumor that we were all not wearing clothes when the podcast was recorded.

29Jul System76 Starling Netbook with Ubuntu Linux reviewed

starling profile

We already knew that Linux PC seller System76 was having a hard time keeping the Ubuntu-powered Starling netbook in stock. Now maybe we know why. Blogger Jane Hadley picked up a Starling netbook last month and wrote up a detailed review of her first Linux netbook. She came away quite impressed with both the hardware and software. She said the Ubuntu Linux software was easy to use, and the netbook had enough power to run several programs simultaneously without slowing down.

As netbooks go, the Starling doesn’t have the best specs around. The battery’s only good for about 3.5 hours, and the 0.3MP webcam is a bit subpar. But for the $359 asking price, the System76 Starling netbook seems like a pretty good deal.

29Jul Joby Renames The GorillaPod Go-Go to Gorillamobile

gorillapodgo-go-004_medium_thumbIt’s all in the naming I guess.

Joby makes these really cool flexible tripods for a number of devices, including a smaller version that used to be called the GorillaPod Go-Go. (I gave it a review here almost a year ago.) But mobile is in and I guess the Go-Go moniker wasn’t sticking so it has been re-christened as the GorillaMobile. Still the same price of $29.95 and it still comes with multiple attachment heads so you can pretty much attach it to any device. I like this little accessory quite a bit.

29Jul HP Mini 1101 now available with 6 cell battery, 32GB SSD options… for a price

HP began taking orders for the HP Mini 1101 in May. But at the time you were left without any major configuration options. Now when you order the  Mini 1101 from the HP Small Busines store you can either choose from one of 2 pre-configured models or customize your own. But you’ll wind up paying an arm and a leg to get a custom version.

The cheapest pre-configured version sells for $329 and includes  a3 cell batter, 10.1 inch, 1024 x 576 pixel display, 1GB of RAM, and a 160G hard drive. It runs Windows XP Home. For $429, you can get the same netbook, plus an internal 3G module capable of connecting to wireless broadband networks from Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T.

The cheapest customized version will set you back $427, with the price easily topping $600 when you add options like a 6 cell battery, 32GB SSD, or 3G module. There is no higher resolution screen option.

Hopefully HP will add a few pre-configured options to the lineup with 6 cell batteries and other advanced options soon, because it seems silly to pay $$537 for a laptop that’s identical to the $329 version in all respects but the battery.

The HP Mini 1101 doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of HP’s other business-class netbook, like a HD display or DuraKey finish. But it is available with FreeDOS, larger hard drives, and other options that you won’t find on the consumer-oriented HP Mini 110.

29Jul Bing and Yahoo! Search To Team Up

Microsoft has recently redesigned their search engine with new algorithms and searching methods, calling it Bing and hoping to compete with other search engines. They have so far failed to gain much traction, but by partnering up with Yahoo! Search - the distant 2nd place search engine behind Google - they hope to start a revolution.

Bing will handle the searching whereas Yahoo! will handle the advertising. To date Google has remained mum on the supposed partnership, keeping their eyes peeled but knowing full well that regulators will be carefully monitoring the deal all the way through.

29Jul Super Talent launches “world’s smallest” 32GB USB flash drive

pico 32gbI’m always wary when a company claims to have produced the world’s smallest version of anything. That said, the new Super Talent Pico USB drive is pretty darn tiny for a flash drive that holds up to 32GB of data.  It measures just 1.5 inches by .5 inches and weighs less than 6 grams, or about 0.21 ounces.

The Pico drives have transfer rates of up to 30MB/s and come in a few different configurations, with some models featuring a swivel-style design, while others have a slide-out USB connector. The water-resistant flash drives will run abotu $85 for a standard 32GB model, and $99 for a slightly fancier version with built in AES-256 hardware encryption.
